Tips for first-time auto insurance buyers

Posted in: Auto InsuranceAlways compare rates and choose an affordable deductible

If you are looking at auto insurance policies for the first time, congratulations! Being a responsible driver with insurance backing your travels is a great way to start out on the road to independence. But just like every new endeavor, there are a few things you should learn before you buy.

Compare rates at multiple companies

Always compare auto insurance rates: It doesn’t matter if you’ve found a policy you can afford your first time out; you should still compare rates. You may be able to get a policy with another company that offers better coverage, lower deductibles, and higher limits with that same affordable premium.

Pay close attention to your deductible

Make sure you can afford your deductible: If you look at the number of car accidents each day versus the number of drivers on the road, you might think that you are not really at risk for having an accident. This line of thought could lead you to take out an auto insurance policy with a high deductible that you cannot afford.

Remember, if you actually do have an accident (and the less experience you have as a driver, the more likely that is), you will need to pay the deductible. If you have a deductible you cannot afford, this could become a real barrier to getting your car repaired and meeting your financial obligations.

Being a more responsible driver definitely helps you qualify for lower car insurance rates. Matter of fact, some insurance companies offer discounts to clients who have completed defensive driving training program as well as when your car comes with anti-lock brakes, automatic seat belts, airbags and anti-theft devices.
