Global warming is expected to have the greatest impact on Africa, Asia and Latin America, the regions with the poorest people. For the millions already living on the margins, the shocks—increasingly intense natural disasters, disease outbreaks and falling agricultural productivity—could push them even further into poverty. Noting the active role MFIs already play in these communities, the report highlights challenges facing them, particularly those working in agricultural regions, and provides recommendations for “climate-proofing” their existing services, including offering insurance for the most vulnerable activities.

“Microfinance institutions already provide a vital link to financial security for millions of poor people, making them a valuable intermediary in serving these disadvantaged communities,” said Alex Counts, president of Grameen Foundation. “These institutions’ ability to adapt and adjust to the demands of climate change will, therefore, have a significant impact on their clients and the communities they serve.”

Pointing to the experiences of Grameen Bank in 1998 when two-thirds of Bangladesh was flooded for 13 weeks, MFIs in Central America that faced Hurricane Mitch, and the devastating 2004 tsunami in Southeast Asia, the report offers several core recommendations. To help clients, as well as the institutions, better prepare for and recover from disasters, MFIs should:


* Reconfigure loans and savings products and increase availability of health, livestock and other weather-related insurance
* Introduce and expand the use of renewable energy, such as solar, to relieve energy poverty
* Develop disaster plans and create disaster funds both at their head and local offices
* Collaborate with national governments and other civil society organizations to prepare a National Adaption Program of Action


“Despite the enormity of the problem, the microfinance community has been largely silent about climate change, except for some initiatives focused on green microfinance,” said Asif Dowla, who currently serves as the Hilda C. Landers Endowed Chair in the Liberal Arts Department of Economics at St. Mary’s College. “While these efforts are laudable and should continue, microfinance institutions need to be more proactive in developing long-term plans for natural disasters and other consequences of climate change.”

Women Leaders and Gender Parity Programme

Through the Women Leaders and Gender Parity Programme, the World Economic Forum is committed to promoting women’s leadership and closing global gender gaps. The programme strives to increase the participation of women in the Forum’s activities by ensuring their involvement as members in communities and inviting women leaders to be active contributors to the global dialogue.

The programme also aims to to monitor progress of countries through benchmarking tools that measure the global gender gap and to showcase best practices in the business world for increasing gender diversity. This unique content is used to promote dialogue and catalyze action through Gender Parity Groups – multi-stakeholder communities of highly influential leaders (50% women and 50% men) committed to closing gender gaps.

The Global Gender Gap Report 2009

Iceland (1) has claimed the top spot of the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Index 2009 from Norway (3) which slipped to third position behind Finland (2). Sweden (4) completed the Nordic countries’ continued dominance of the top four. The report’s Index assesses countries on how well they are dividing their resources and opportunities among their male and female populations, regardless of the overall levels of these resources and opportunities. South Africa and Lesotho made great strides in closing their gender gaps to enter the top 10, at sixth and 10th position respectively. The Philippines (9) lost ground for the first time in four years but remains the leading Asian country in the rankings.

Out of the 115 countries covered in the report since 2006, more than two-thirds have posted gains in overall index scores, indicating that the world in general has made progress towards equality between men and women, although there are countries that continue to lose ground.

The Global Enabling Trade Report 2009

East Asian economies – Singapore and Hong Kong SAR – occupy the top two positions in the Enabling Trade Index ranking, followed by Switzerland, Denmark and Sweden, according to The Global Enabling Trade Report 2009, released today by the World Economic Forum. Canada, Norway, Finland, Austria and the Netherlands complete the top-10 list.

The Global Enabling Trade Report 2009 measures and analyzes institutions, policies, and services enabling trade in national economies around the world, highlighting for policymakers a country’s strengths and the challenges to be addressed. The Report includes the most current data and recent analysis of the factors enabling trade in industrialized and emerging economies, as well as the latest thinking and research from trade experts and industry practitioners.

The Report presents the rankings of the updated Enabling Trade Index (ETI), developed by the World Economic Forum in collaboration with international trade experts and leaders from the logistics and transport industry. It is a comprehensive index intended to capture the full range of issues that contribute to impeding trade, ranking nations according to factors that facilitate the free flow of goods across national borders and to destination.

Since the publication of the Report in 2008, the Index has been enhanced by explicitly introducing the export dimension. The last section of the Report contains detailed profiles for the 121 economies covered by the ETI.

In addition, the Report includes insightful contributions from a number of trade experts. Among these essays are explorations of different aspects of trade facilitation, such as the availability of trade finance in the current financial climate, analysis of non-tariff barriers, and global efforts in the area of trade facilitation. A particular focus this year is on customs, a key area of the Doha negotiations.

The Global Competitiveness Report 2009-2010

Switzerland tops the overall ranking in The Global Competitiveness Report 2009-2010. The United States falls one place to second position, with weakening in its financial markets and macroeconomic stability. Singapore, Sweden and Denmark round out the top five. European economies continue to prevail in the top 10 with Finland, Germany and the Netherlands following suit. The United Kingdom, while remaining very competitive, has continued its fall from last year, moving down one more place this year to 13th, mainly attributable to continuing weakening of its financial markets.

The rankings are calculated from both publicly available data and the Executive Opinion Survey, a comprehensive annual survey conducted by the World Economic Forum together with its network of Partner Institutes (leading research institutes and business organizations) in the countries covered by the Report.
