Snow Tubing on New Years Day at Wisp

We were entertaining some family over the holidays, and I wanted to share this picture. I took my daughter, Kayleah, and her cousin Tara (also pictured is her father, Jason, both from Damascus, MD) snow tubing on January 1st, 2010 at Wisp Ski Resort. The Bear Claw Tubing Park was packed and it was a beautiful snowy winter day. If you haven't tried it, I highly recommend it. It's fast and fun, and they serve snacks, hot chocolate and draft beer (Sam Adamas Winter Lager was great) to keep your spirits up! We also tried the mountain coaster, which was my first time in the snow. Definitely make sure to add these to your vacation list of things to do!

MCHENRY — A worker at the Wisp Ski Resort who was injured by a snow-grooming machine was recovering from surgery in Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, W.Va., on Friday afternoon.

Kevan Monn was listed in stable condition by hospital officials after being transferred there Wednesday from Garrett Memorial Hospital.

Moon was working in a maintenance garage Thursday when he was pulled beneath the rear end of the machine, which resembles a bulldozer, according to Wisp spokeswoman Lori Epp.

Northern Rescue Squad and Deep Creek Volunteer Fire Department responded to the 2:53 p.m. call Wednesday, according to Garrett emergency officials.

DEEP CREEK LAKE — Wisp Resort continues to expand its winter amenities to go beyond skiing and snowboarding. This winter an ice skating rink will be installed near the Bear Claw Snow Tubing Park to offer guests another family-friendly activity.

The 50- by 85-foot oval rink will operate by running cooling pipes under a floor that are powered by a 100-ton chiller to keep approximately two to three inches of water frozen. A mini-Zamboni® ice resurfacing machine will groom the surface daily for skaters. The Zamboni® was named after its inventor Frank J. Zamboni in California in 1953.

The ice skating rink at Wisp will feature benches for rest, hanging twinkle lights, a nearby bonfire area and warm beverages. It will be the only ice rink in Garrett County and has a tentative opening date of Dec. 19.

The rink will operate in conjunction with the Bear Claw Snow Tubing Park and Mountain Coaster hours of operation.

Pittsburgh Symphony 'Pops' Review - Wisp Resort

I had the pleasure (and luck) of grabbing a last-minute ticket to the Friday night show of the Pittsburgh Symphony at Wisp Resort. Marvin Hamlisch, who is incredibly well acclaimed, had the audience rolling with laughter from the first moment of the show. The music was incredible, and the sun setting over Marsh Mountain provided a beautiful twilight as the Symphony played. Congrats to GLAF and thanks to all of the sponsors who made it possible to have them here again!

Here is an early attempt at video editing :) This is the finale of the fireworks the other night, shot from Ski Harbor. The most impressive fireworks display I can remember at Deep Creek Lake! Make sure to turn up your sound - the explosions would echo through the mountains and 2-3 seconds later you would hear the sound reverberation...

History of the Wisp Ski Resort

History of the Wisp

Over the years the resort has grown from a former cow pasture into one of the premier destinations in the Mid-Atlantic. Below are some of the many historic landmarks:

Winter 1955 - 1956: Mr. Heise forms Recreational Industries, Inc. and offers skiing on Marsh Mountain for the first time. A cow pasture owned by a local farmer becomes a makeshift ski area. A one room hut with a pot-bellied stove serves as the first lodge and the bed of a pick-up truck operates as the first ski rental shop. One slope, The Face, is serviced by a rope tow.

Winter 1956 - 1957: Recreational Industries first attempts to make snow, using equipment resembling lawn sprinklers, which emitted frozen pellets of water.

1965: The first double chairlift (Chair #1) is installed. For the first time skiers are able to ski from the top of Marsh Mountain.

1969: WISP offers night skiing, with the addition of lights on the slopes

1971-1979: Wisp expands to 16 trails and adds snow makers, more lights, and two additional chairlifts. The first motel, The Village Inn, opens at the base of the ski mountain. The snow making system is converted to an airless system, increasing power and efficiency.

1981: Wisp opens its 18 hole golf course, and is now recognized officially as the only four-season resort in the State on Maryland.

1985 - 1986: The Village Inn Motel is renovated and transformed into a Condo Hotel and is renamed the Wisp Resort hotel.

Winter 1987 - 1988: The East Ridge Trail and Life System are added, with 2 triple chairs.

1994: Developers purchased 2,400 acres of land adjacent to Wisp.

2001: DC Development, LLC purchases the Wisp from Mr. Heise and begins a major capitol improvement project. Chair 5 is extended, Chair 4 is relocated and Highline Trail is added. Bear Claw Snow Tubing Park opens.

2003: The Lodge undergoes renovation and is expanded by 11,000 sq.ft. Triple chairs replace the double chairs of 2 & 3 and a ski carpet replaces the rope tow.

2004: Completion of 8500 sq.ft. "State-of-the-art" pump house increases snow making capacity by 18% and is fully automated. Recreational Industries assumes management of Wisp Resort Hotel.

Winter 2005 - 2006: Opening of the first two phases of a four-phase ski area expansion. New beginner and intermediate terrain with 10 new trails, adding over 25% more skiable terrain and 2 quad chairlifts.

Summer 2007: Opening of White Water Course

Over $30 million in renovations and capital improvements since June 2001.

SPECIAL OLYMPIANS/SPECIAL GUESTS – The state of Delaware has both Alpine and Nordic Winter Special Olympics ski teams; the only problem is, Delaware has no mountains and very little snow, making it next to impossible for organizers to host their own Olympics. So that's why the teams will be guests at the Wisp in McHenry this coming week, as a special invitation was issued to the team by Special Olympics Maryland to come participate in Maryland's winter events, slated to get under way Monday morning. After turning on WKHJ in the morning on Thursday, I heard that a tornado (it was later determined to be a 'downburst') had touched down on Oakland Sang Run Rd from the storms the night before. It's not every day that this happens in Garrett County, so I jumped in my car to see what had happened.

It brought back memories for me, as some friends of mine and I had searched for remnants of a tornado many years earlier. I think it was 1999 or 2000, but a tornado had touched down near the Garrett County airport (among other places) and we were driving up to check on my friends airplane. When we got to the entrance fo the airport, there were 3 or 4 huge trees down, blocking the road. We climbed over the trees and walked up to the runway. Had I not seen this, I never would have believed it:

As we walked up to runway, there was a Cessna chained down to the asphalt. In the middle of the wing, there was a twig - not a stick or a branch - but a twig that had been 'pushed' through 2 feet or so of the fiberglass wing on the airplane. It was quite a sight, and it was inconveniently before time were digital cameras were prevalent, so I have no photos. Anyway, seeing that I have credentials as a day-after 'tornado chaser', I was anxious to see what happened near the Wisp Ski Resort.

As you can see from the photos, whatever it was was powerful enough to break off these mature trees near mid-trunk. Thankfully, the damage was not extensive and there were no major injuries, but it doesn't really compare to the fallout from the tornado in 1999/2000.

Deep Creek Lake officially freezes

I took these photos from the Sunplace community lakefront area on Wednesday morning. I wasn't about to walk out to try the ice, but it sure looked frozen to me. I had seen scattered groups of ice-fishermen out on the ice, so I had a pretty good idea it was solid. Later on in the day, I noticed a few snowmobilers zooming by, so the lake must *officially* be frozen! Wisp Ski Resort lost little time in terms of snowmaking - you could hear the hum of the snowmakers in the distance. The one thing that you can't see from these photos is the WIND. It had to be blowing around 30-40 mph and it was FREEZING. It was all I could stand to take these few pics and then dive back into my vehicle.
